Get a life - the meaning and philosophy.
Let us analyze what we expect to have in someone’s life.
A great career, ability to buy possessions, being extravagant, being a party animal, discussing cool things that cool people talk about, getting intoxicated with addictions that are popular, company of popular friends that mostly consist of the opposite gender and the list goes on.
It might seem vague if we fail to realize that all of this narrows down to a very dangerous philosophy. Mind you, we aren’t discussing a philosophy that was preached by Jesus, Muhammad, Buddha or Sankaracharya. This is a philosophy that is being preached by millions of people today. Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Sikhs, you name it; they are in plenty around us.
This philosophy is called “Materialism.”
Materialism is used as an ideology, a way of thinking and even an attitude towards life.
This is the mentality and ideology of the western society- Happiness can only be obtained by accumulating possessions. To buy, consume and boast about it.
We are all victims of the same. When someone buys something, our mind desires for it. Then we wouldn't get sleep until we get it. The question is, does that make you happy? No, it gives you a momentary happiness. After a couple of days or weeks, you are back in the same state of mind- Depression and sadness.
Every parent who is preaching materialism spends their life shouting and yelling at their kids to be competitive and be first in whatever they do, so that their kids would be able to build a great career and life ahead, only to buy whatever they want and be happy with it. The parents, in order to convince their kid, buy toys, video games or anything they ask for, in return to their achievements. This is in a vague realization that these material possessions would give true happiness to their kids and motivate them for the ultimate goal to be first, ignoring all human values and elements to make them an independent being.
When the kid asks his parents why he is striving so hard to be first and beat everyone else in the competition of life, his parent’s reply would always be,
“My dear child, we want you to be first, so that you could be successful in life.”
To which the kid replies,” What is it like being successful?”
“Success means you can buy anything you want. You’d always be happy after that.”
This in turn makes an assumption that happiest people on the face of this planet are the richest and most successful. When we do an autopsy on their lives, most of them are having problems far greater than a normal guy who wants to be like them someday. Way too many of those “influential people” either committed suicide or find shelter in intoxications until they’re dead. You can research about people like that and realize it for yourself. When you see them in the advertisements, they're the coolest and happiest people ever, but the reality is entirely different.
Even the Government preaches the same.
"Economic prosperity is the only thing a country needs to progress. Money is the source of happiness. More money means happier people. You don’t have to think. You don't need religion. Preach secularism. We would make the economy better. We would make you richer so that you could buy and accumulate things that you don’t need. That would definitely make you all happy."
This mantra had been working for ages in Indian elections. The word economy has now become synonymous to whatever you need to make yourself happy.
A contented person would always be satisfied with whatever they have and have time to think about everything in life that the world is striving for. They are the ones who lead revolutions in a country. They protest, outrage and gain independence from the shackles of tyrants.
But a materialistic person would only be bothered about his miserable life and to fetch means to buy and accumulate more things to make him happy. The happiness in this case is like orgasm. It doesn't last until he gets bored of things he bought for himself.
Materialism also defines the herd mentality, to get along with people who share similar principles.
They hate people who aren’t like them because whatever those people preach is the entire opposite to what materialists strive for. Religion, true purpose of life means nothing to them. According to materialists, religion is just the thing you do for relaxation. It doesn’t have any other purpose in life.
“Make sure you keep it away from day to day life. Happiness and content can only be provided by possessions, alcohol, smoke, tasty food and other forms of entertainment. Religion is for boring people. We can lol, lmao and Rofl at jokes on facebook, play online games, take stupid quizzes , discuss 7 hour wastage called cricket and fight over scams and scandals because for everything else, we are busy and have no time.”
Is this the kind of life you want to get? Is this the ideology that can make you happy?
Think over it. Find the answer for yourself.
